Quick Verdict
Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus are both priced at $20/month, making them direct rivals at the individual subscription tier. Claude Pro wins for long-context document work and structured reasoning. ChatGPT Plus wins for breadth of tooling, coding access via Codex, and integrated multimodal features.
Pricing
Both plans start at $20/month on monthly billing.
- Claude Pro: $20/month or $16.67/month on annual billing ($200/year prepaid). The annual option saves 17% over monthly.
- ChatGPT Plus: $20/month. Annual billing is not currently available for Plus — monthly-only pricing applies.
If annual savings matter, Claude Pro has the edge. ChatGPT Plus locks you into monthly billing cycles.
Model Access
- Claude Pro unlocks Opus, Sonnet, and Haiku — Anthropic’s full model family at this tier. The plan also includes Claude Code and Cowork features and operates with a 200K token context window.
- ChatGPT Plus unlocks GPT-5.2 Instant and GPT-5.2 Thinking, plus legacy OpenAI models. It adds Codex access for in-chat coding workflows and supports multimodal inputs. The context window is 32K tokens.
Claude Pro has a dramatically larger context window — 200K vs 32K. If you regularly work with long documents, codebases, or extended threads, Claude Pro is structurally better suited.
Usage Limits
- Claude Pro uses a session-based limit: at least 45 short messages per 5-hour window (the session resets every 5 hours). Extra usage can be toggled in settings at standard API rates.
- ChatGPT Plus uses dynamic caps — no fixed public message count. Plus includes “unlimited*” interactions with guardrails, and optional flexible credit top-ups for Codex or Sora usage after included limits.
Claude Pro gives more predictable limits with a published session baseline. ChatGPT Plus offers more flexibility through credits but with less transparency on exact caps.
